Everything you need to know about serving in the production and technology team.

Welcome

… and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, with intelligence, with knowledge, and with all craftsmanship,
Exodus 35:3

Technology has changed the way we live, interact, communicate and learn. It has brought those far away, close. It has created opportunities no one imagined possible only a short time ago.

Technology plays a huge role in the Church. Innovation in how we communicate God’s word has played a central role in changing how we do church over the past few decades. We are seeing integration on a whole another level. However, the focus must always remain on Jesus.

Tech is a valuable tool that should be used as just that…a tool. It is never the goal to have a “production”. Production does not bring people to Jesus. Jesus brings people to Jesus. Content trumps production any day of the week and twice on Sunday (see what I did there!)

It is my prayer that God, just like he did with Oholiab and Bezalel in Exodus 31 & 35, will anoint the creative and powerful use of our production team’s skills and knowledge to bring Him glory, and let the Holy Spirit speak what he wants to speak through the clear communication of His Word.

By being a part of the Citylife Production and Technology Team, you will have the opportunity to not only serve the ministries of Citylife Church but also participate in regional unity and encouragement through the South Coast Church Techs community. What you are a part of is bigger than the part you play.

Induction
A legal requirement we have as a Church is to run all new volunteers through an induction process. It sounds very formal but is actually really helpful and will give you a smooth entry into our volunteer family at Citylife.

Part of the induction process is making sure you have gone through the content on this page and on www.citylife.org.au/serve. After that, you will be given a link to our Volunteer Induction page and catch up with Josh to run through the information relevant to you.

WWCC
Although the production team isn’t directly involved with kids ministry we want all our volunteers at Citylife to have an up-to-date WWCC. See below link to apply for yours and once you have been approved, send through the details to office@citylife.org.au.

FAQ’s

How do I join the Production and Tech Team?
If you want to be part of the team in any capacity, the first thing to do is register your interest through the below link, or have a chat with Josh. You will need to come to music practices first, as well as participate in a volunteer induction process and some basic tech training. We will teach you all you need to know!

We also want you to be actively part of a cell and a congregation gathering.

What are the key areas to serve in?
There are four main technology areas to serve the church in:

  • Sound/Audio (PRIMARY) – involves operating the audio console and sound system for Sunday gatherings, setting up for soundcheck, troubleshooting any issues, and helping the service run smoothly, including helping with and monitoring the live stream and other tech areas (such as kids). The general commitment would be Sundays for around 3 hours including the service.
  • Vision (PRIMARY)- responsible for anything sent to the main sanctuary projection screen, as well as the live stream, stage display (what the band sees), and any TVs around the facility (ie Foyer, Parents Room, Creche, etc). Involves using software such as ProPresenter, OBS, Resolume as well as hardware such as video/DSLR cameras, video switchers and converters. The general commitment would be Sundays for around 3 hours including the service.
  • IT – this is an important and growing need. Someone who can understand and maintain the IT infrastructure in the building, including managing file servers, printers, PCs, Macs and mobile devices (iPads), WiFi, Dante (audio over IP), Routers and switchers, as well as cloud SaaS offerings such as GSuite, Office 365, etc.
  • Lighting – operating the lighting fixtures in the building. Uses a lighting controller as well as software. This is a minor role and generally consolidated into the other Sunday roles. There is scope to grow this area further.

Do I need to play an instrument?
No.

However, some musical background or involvement in the music team can be very beneficial as you will be working closely with the Worship Team and it can be helpful for things like song lyrics or mix cues.

It looks too complicated!
It may, and there certainly are some more complex components and concepts, however, the general operation of the equipment for the typical AM or PM gathering is VERY simple, easy, and straightforward.
