Jesus followers were obsessed with status and position. They repeatedly argued over who was the greatest among them (Mk.9, 10; Lk.22) and jostled for position. Jesus was obsessed with serving. His emphasis was to be a servant. He came for that purpose Himself and took extreme measures to force the lesson home with His followers. He went so far as to call us to be slaves of all and demonstrated the same at the last supper (Jn.13). He was teacher and Lord and washed the feet of those who would betray Him. Not just Judas but all of them.
Great servants follow Jesus example. Great servants are fully aware of their position and strength. Like humility, true service is not motivated by insecurity but strength. A strong person can act decisively and choose to be humble. They can meet needs effectively and finish the task. If you want to honour Jesus in your life then learn to be a servant. Continually ask yourself – how can I serve the people God has put in front of me?
1. How does insecurity affect your ability to serve others?
2. What other factors stop us from serving others?
3. Think of two or three people in your life – How could you serve them more graciously and effectively?
